The lads done them selves proud with a 4-1 win against a older age group, I have attached the photographers web link so the players can see the photos for themselves. The goal scorers were Dean Dillon(3 goals) & Josh Hogan(1 goal)".

St Francis FC wins Intercultural Award.

Paul and Tommy receive the award from Minister John Curran.
The Minister for Integration, John Curran, TD visited FAI Headquarters recently to present seven clubs for excelling in the Intercultural Football Standards Grassroots pilot.
The grassroots pilot was designed as a quality mark scheme that encourages partnerships between local clubs and ethnic minority communities. The main aim is to promote greater connectivity between grassroots football and diverse local communities and to set out a pathways into football for those interested in playing or just volunteering.

The pilot, which was rolled out in 14 clubs and community projects throughout Ireland, builds on the many partnerships with both statutory and voluntary groups in the community who have an interest in promoting participation in sports among people from new and diverse ethnic communities.
The presentation was made to Willow Park F.C Athlone , Corrib Rangers Galway City, Coole Park F.C. Gort Co Galway, St Francis F.C. Dublin, Mulhuddart Community Football Club, Errigal College and Bonegee United Letterkenny and New Ross Celtic and RAPID Wexford.

The clubs worked in partnership with Community groups in their area to deliver activities that encouraged participation on a variety of levels including volunteering, coaching and playing. All clubs supported the delivery of after-school club drop in sessions for girls and boys as well as a fun football Open Day at their clubs. Adult volunteers where encouraged and supported by clubs/project such as Corrib Rangers who provided mentoring for volunteers interested in helping out at the club.

Minister Curran said, "Sport is an important vehicle for the promotion of integration of newcomers in Irish society. The immigration which has taken place especially since 2004 has changed our society very significantly and the economic downturn will not reverse this change. Therefore, it is important that the work of integration continues. I would like to congratulate the clubs and groups receiving awards here today and to compliment them and all the participants in the Scheme."

FAI Intercultural Co-ordinator Des Tomlinson said, "The Grassroots Intercultural Football Standards Pilot (GIFS) Scheme builds on the good practice and openness displayed by many clubs throughout Ireland. As part of the GIFs scheme selected clubs worked with schools, communities and FAI development officers to roll out football programmes for children and adults. Each club was chosen to be part of the GIFS based on having a community as well as competitive ethos to its work."

He added, "Community partners provided the much needed assistance to clubs in identifying and engaging with individuals and groups from migrant or ethnic minority backgrounds. Reflecting on the examples of good practice it is heartening to see the many examples of how football and football clubs are contributing towards the process of integration and building the citizens and stars of tomorrow."

St Francis Ladies win The Echo 'Team of the Year'. Yet another prestigious honour for Paddy and the ladies! Please see the article below from The Echo and also some pics from the awards night at the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel.

THE Echo Amateur Sports Awards, in conjunction with the South Dublin County Sports Partnership and The Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, marked another first for St Francis Senior Ladies soccer team.
Having become the first non-top flight side to capture the WFAI Cup last year, they later became the first DWSL outfit to make it a treble of WFAI and Premier League Cup as as well as Premier Division honours.
And last week in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, the Baldonnell side became the first winners of The Echo Team of the Year title.
It served to cap a super season for the team which won everything before it on the domestic front and even got a taste of top European soccer- something they will sample yet again in 2010.
Manager Pat Heffernan was thrilled to see his girls lift the overall prize and believes this signaled something special for women's soccer in general.
“For a women's team to make the breakthrough at that level was very significant” he told The Echo.
“I always felt that because we had won a national title we were in with a chance and to actually win the title was really the icing on a great year for us.
“The sheer magnitude of the night was amazing and our chairman, staff and all the players were over the moon at picking up the Team of the Year award” he added.
Francis made it back-to-back WFAI Cup honours when they successfully defended the prize, edging out St Catherine’s in the decider, compliments of a Sharon Cullen goal.
It was against the same opposition that they bagged the Premier League Cup prize, this time after a convincing 3-0 victory.
And when they saw off the challenge of Templeogue to tear out of the reach of Peamount United and Raheny in the race for the DWSL Premier Division crown, a superb treble had been completed.
On the European front, a few hard lessons were learnt as Francis went down to top-calibre sides from Russia, Israel and group hosts Cyprus, although the sheer scorching heat certainly did nothing for their cause on that occasion.
The saints will be back to give it another shot next year and, given the right conditions, could well turn a few heads and fulfill the dream of bring women's Champions League soccer to the Irish Capital.
“I feel we are changing the face of women's soccer in Ireland” insisted Heffernan.
“More and more kids are coming out to watch the girls play and that's because we play a very attractive style of football.
“The likes of Mary Waldron and Sharon Cullen are names that are now, not just well know in soccer circles, but outside that sphere also.
“Our target for next year is to make it three WFAI Cup titles in a row and ultimately to bring European women's soccer to South Dublin for the very first time” he added.
They will be launching their bid for such in June, but before, they will begin another bid for a domestic clean sweep in April.
What's more the club will also have plenty of interest in the resumption of the Republic of Ireland's European campaigns at Under 17 and Under 19 degree.
Megan Campbell and Niamh Nolan may figure for the latter while 14-year-olds Shauna Newman and Nicole Cranny have been call-ed up to the Under 17s.

Brendan Oliver Manager 8C1 - Letter from one of the parents at Lucan Utd.

Bren is not one to look for attention but he's no choice in this one, we have received a letter from Lucan Utd and well, just read the letter below, it speaks for itself. I'm sure all of us who know Bren will agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment for a real coach of the game.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I just thought I'd drop you a line to congratulate your organisation
on its setup and particularly your under-8 team and management. My son
plays for Lucan united under 8's and St. Francis were the visitors
last Sunday morning (6th of September). I have to say the attitude of
the St.Francis management and parents was first class and thoroughly
refreshing. From other matches I'd attended, I was beginning to think
that our team (Lucan) was one of the only teams who try to encourage
the children rather then shout at them and constantly criticize them
over what they can't do. However, I'm glad to say that St. Francis
were equal to us in this area.
The St.Francis manager, from the first moment to the last, gave clear,
concise and simple instructions to the kids and congratulated them on
everything they did and he was ably supported in this by his
assistants. In fact I don't think I heard one word of criticism from
him throughout the game. His only concern was for the well-being of
the kids and at half time I heard him checking with the kids to make
sure they were breathing okay and weren't out of breath.
Anyway, the bottom line is that I was very impressed by an attitude
which unfortunately I have found to be the exception rather then the
rule. I hope you will pass on my admiration to all concerned.
regards,
Emmet Kane

They done it again!!!!!!!!
Well done to the St Francis FC Ladies on retaining the FAI Cup.

Here is the Match Report from the FAI.

St. Francis retain FAI Umbro Women's FAI Senior Cup title

Sharon Cullen's second-half winner against St. Catherine's in the final ensured St. Francis retained their FAI Umbro Women's senior Cup at Richmond Park.

Catherine's knew they would have to contain the strike-force of Sharon Cullen and last year's final match-winner Mary Waldron to have the best chance of claiming their first senior National Cup.

But they were almost unhinged just five minutes in as Cullen was left unmarked inside the area but her header lacked the power to trouble goalkeeper Charlene McKenna.

Tom Shannon's side soon showed their own attacking threat and had winger Ealish Murray spotted Hannah Tyrrell in plenty of space inside the area on 13 minutes instead of hastily firing wide, they might have been ahead.

While Murray posed lots of problems down the flank, Sandra Mulhall did likewise for Francis. It was her trickery that had the Catherine's defence on alert and she was given lots of room to exploit during the opening half.

On 27 minutes, defender Kim Flood had to produce a last-ditch clearance to prevent Waldron from putting away the loose ball.

However, it was at the other end four minutes later that the ball did end up in the net. Murray's corner-kick hung the air to allow Hannah Tyrrell charge into the six-yard box to head the ball into the net but Referee Hilda McDermott deemed the striker's challenge on the ‘keeper Áine Genocky to be excessive and awarded a free out.

Francis captain Karina Kelly's shot from the edge of the area was wayward just past the half hour as the contest became more open.

In the dying seconds of the first half, Catherine's carved out their best chance when Peral Slattery broke into the area only to have her toe-poked shot saved by the legs of Genocky.

The holders stepped it up in the notch after the break with their front duo providing more of a threat. Mary Waldron looked poised to give them the lead on the hour as she ran clear unchallenged but McKenna got the slightest of touches on the striker's shot to divert it wide.

St. Francis did get in front after 63 minutes through a flowing move. Sandra Mulhall worked the opening by crossing from the left and Waldron's cut-back from the far post was slotted home by Sharon Cullen from six yards.

Waldron thought she had doubled the advantage ten minutes later when her curled shot from 20 yards evaded the ‘keeper but the effort struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced back into play.

The closest St. Catherine's came to finding an equaliser arrived 15 minutes from time as Kim Flood was given time at the back post to shoot - yet her shot was turned over by Genocky.

ST. CATHERINE'S: Charlene McKenna; Kim Flood, Amy McLoughlin, Susan Heapes (Niki Sheridan 88), Diane O'Hora; Wendy McGrath (Dionne Lyons 46), Caroline Thorpe, Mel Houghton, Eailish Murray; Hannah Tyrrell, Peral Slattery. ST. FRANCIS: Aine Genocky; Niamh Nolan (Megan Campbell 82), Louise Corrigan, Caroline McEvoy, Rebecca Dowling; Grainne Kearins (Saidhbh Collins 90), Karina Kelly, Seana Cooke, Sandra Mulhall; Mary Waldron, Sharon Cullen.

UEFA Champions League Update.
The biggest achievement by any St Francis team is about to happen this summer. St Francis FC Ladies team will be playing in the UEFA Champions league from 30-July to 4-Aug. The draw for the group stage has been made and St Francis have been drawn in group A6.

St Francis qualified for the Champions League, 1st phase after defeating local rivals, Peamount 2-1 in the 2008 FAI Umbro Women’s Cup and they continued their incredible unbeaten run in the national cup and will now contest the 2009 final before they fly out to Cyprus to take part in the UEFA Champions League.
The mini-tournament winners will progress to join the 25 other entrants, including current champions, FCR 2001 Duisburg, in the knockout phase of the competition.

Team manager manager, Paddy Heffernan expressed his delight at the draw made by UEFA President, Michel Platini, “This is a very exciting time for everybody involved in the club and the local community. I believe that this team are well capable of competing at the very highest level and we will give it our all to become the very first Irish side to advance to the second round of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Preparation for this tournament has been on-going since our FAI Cup final victory against Peamount last November and the girls have been working hard in the gym and on the field ever since.”

“The Russian side will obviously be our main threat if we are to progress from this group and after speaking to some of our international players who have played against Russian opposition, it is obvious that we are in for a tough physical battle against the Russians. I am incredibly happy with the draw as we have avoided, in my opinion, the strongest teams such as Brondby and Bayern Munich. We are in a very strong position to challenge in this group and our warm-up to the Champions League is the FAI Umbro Women’s Cup final against either St. Catherine’s or the Cork women’s League. It takes a good team to make it to a national final but I believe it takes a special one to contest two major finals in a row,” he added.

Group A6
WFC Rossiyanka (RUS)
Maccabi Holon FC (ISR)
St Francis FC (IRL)
Apollon Limassol (CYP)

The whole club and indeed the country needs to get behind the team and give them all the support they deserve in what is an historic achievement.

Come on the girls!!
